چکیده

We have studied patterns of electrically-driven convective vortices in thin freely-suspended lms of smectic liquid crystal at and above the onset of con-vection. We present measurements of the convective amplitude above onset, the spatial variation of the amplitude due to the presence of end walls, and the relaxation of the amplitude following a sudden change in the experimental control parameter. Our experimental results are shown to agree with predictions based on the Ginzburg-Landau equation, and we nd values for the dimensionless length and time scales of the Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Electroconvection in Nematic Liquid Crystals: Comparison between Experimental Results and the Hydrodynamic Model

We describe experimental observations illustrating the extraordinary sensitivity of pattern formation in electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals to changes in magnitude and sign of dynamic transport coe cients triggered by weak uctuations from a lower temperature nematic-smectic A phase transition. These results are compared to predictions of a hydrodynamic model (HM). We nd two patterns a...

Numerical study of domain coarsening in anisotropic stripe patterns.

We study the coarsening of two-dimensional smectic polycrystals characterized by grains of oblique stripes with only two possible orientations. For this purpose, an anisotropic Swift-Hohenberg equation is solved. For quenches close enough to the onset of stripe formation, the average domain size increases with time as t(1/2). Further from onset, anisotropic pinning forces similar to Peierls str...

Annular Electroconvection with Shear Typeset Using Revt E X

Abstract We report experiments on convection driven by a radial electrical force in suspended annular smectic A liquid crystal lms. In the absence of an externally imposed azimuthal shear, a stationary one-dimensional (1D) pattern consisting of symmetric vortex pairs is formed via a supercritical transition at the onset of convection. Shearing reduces the symmetries of the base state and produc...

Longitudinal and normal electroconvection rolls in a nematic liquid crystal with positive dielectric and negative conductivity anisotropy.

We study electroconvection patterns that appear above the splay Fréedericksz transition in a bent-core nematic liquid crystal with positive dielectric and negative conductivity anisotropy. In contrast to most of the previously observed convection rolls in nematics, they are not shadowgraph patterns at onset. Unusual effects are observed like a transition between longitudinal and normal rolls, c...

Weakly Nonlinear Analysis of Electroconvection in a Suspended Fluid Film

It has been experimentally observed that weakly conducting suspended lms of smectic liquid crystals undergo electroconvection when subjected to a large enough potential di erence. The resulting counter-rotating vortices form a very simple convection pattern and exhibit a variety of interesting nonlinear e ects. The linear stability problem for this system has recently been solved. The convectio...
